Salmon Harbor RV Resort is located overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Smith River and is located approximately 8 miles from Brookings, Oregon and 13 miles from Crescent City, California. Both areas have a substantial following by fishermen many who spend the entire summer with us. Ocean fishing for Chinook Salmon is open this year beginning May 29 through September 6, 2010 The threatened Coho (Silver Salmon) may only be taken on the South Coast out of Oregon this year for a limited period until a quota of 26,000 fish is reached beginning June 26 ( healed adipose fin clipped only) until September 6 unless the quota is reached sooner. Check this link and view the proposed regulations for the 2010 season which are available in late spring. Check the yearly regulations for bag limits. Charter boats operate out of both Brookings, Oregon and Crescent City, California ports. In addition to Salmon fishing these charters provide bottom fishing for rock fish, tuna and some conduct whale watching trips as well as Specialty trips to the "Lighthouse" located on St. George's Reef approximately a 10 mile trip by boat from either the Brookings or Crescent City Ports.
Salmon enter the Chetco River in mid to late September and move up river out of tidewater following the first heavy rains. Currently only Chinook may be taken. Quality river Salmon fishing extends through November. Steelhead enter the Chetco late in November and the "run" continues into late February or early March. River guide service is available. The Winchuck River also provides Salmon fishing once the heavy rains open the mouth. Boats may not be used on the Winchuck and fishing is from the bank in tidewater during late November and early December. However, the Winchuck is closed for the 2009 season.
